1964 Nickels

I have been trying to find any silver that I can, but I find alot of 1964 nickels. Did they make alot of nickels in 1964? Im not complaing but would like to find other silver too. Thanks.

1964 nickels are not silver, but there was a huge mintage that year. When I was a kid probably close to half of the nickels in circulation were 1964.

1964 nickel had the largest production number of any nickel up to that date-and for years after. I don't think the 64 production figures (1.0B for the 'plain' and 1.8B for the Denver mint) were duplicated until 35 years later.

I thought anything 1964 and older was silver.

Just dimes, quarters and halves. Nickels were only 35% silver during WWII.

Between 1938 and 1942, then again after 1946, nickels were 75% copper and 25% nickel. During the war years (42-45) the composition was 56/35/9: copper, silver and manganese.

I have mostly 64's and 77's..41, 73, and few others including 2x 1970S nickles, Not sure the S matters in that year.hehe..I have been finding this to also happened with pennies, I have mostly 70's and 80's pennies, 3X 1959's, and 3X 1962's...///shrug..have been doing allot of reading and still need help to get through all that. Any way good luck! BTW! I got the 41, and a few others from an in law who is a trucker and loves to gamble. So he better learn to hide his change jar when he comes around. He don't know it yet but he's my number one target for pilfering.

While searching a box of nickels, I was able to fill a roll of '64's and have some left over.

thats a mountain of nickels man
thats the most nickels minted ever to that date.
there are some futer dates that minted even more.

The most common error on the 64D is a RPM (re-punched mintmark). You need a jewelers loupe or very powerful magnifying glass. Look at the mintmark to the right of the steps, if it appears to double, it is likely an error coin. However, the coins needs to be in at least VF condition to see this error clearly.
