1955 Willy's Military jeep with odd windshield

I'm looking at this 1955 M170 Military jeep for sale and I'm wondering why it has this odd open cut windshield? I've looked over the internet at images and and info on this rig and find no other rigs of this period that has this slot windshield. Some have a two piece post windshield and some have a single no post windshield. I find this type M170 vehicle, set up in a few ways as, personal transports, ambulances, field communications. etc. I'm not finding any that would explain why it has this cutout windshield. The cutout in this windshield, does look to be a period original design and intentional for something?. It could be for a front gun position or it was originally set up to transport something long like a fold down field antenna or something like that? I'm wondering why I can't find anything on this slotted windshield of this military jeep of this era. The guy wants a firm $4000. for it. Looking over the same period M170's for sale the prices vary a lot on condition. I would like to know how it was originally set up for the military when new. It may be a rare vehicle for all I know? It's definitely a relic of the cold war era.

M-170 | eWillys

The M38A1c had a weapons carrier version that could carry a 105mm rifle barrel in the gap.
I'm not real sure but the M-170 being noted for most of all longer wheel bases and not a lot of them made compared to other varients ,maybe a M-38 windshield went on the carrier style models of all lengths?

I think it is leget but set up with an authorize gunner windshield modification, different than the split or solid windshield. When our warfighters see something they need we make it happen, so it didn't need to be installed on the vehicle when it was initially manufactured. It could even be manufactured by another company and not be OEM.

HOLY CRAP!!

Better remember to chock the wheels before firing.:laughing7:

I bet that is rare, 4k seems like a good deal at first glance.
I'm not sure of what this weapon is. The shell chamber looks a little light. Maybe it's a big Bazooka

There's a way around that. Write one word and submit. Then go edit to finish and you'll come out first reply if your one word submit was entered first. I keep forgetting to do that when Back of the Boats around. He gets me every time.
