They're just hard to get a hold of and are very collectible even though 1955 had less minted.

Hey Kleiner- please do not take this the wrong way. I am not saying that your dimes are anything but 100% authentic. I am just curious about this, and figured here would be the best place to address this. We have all heard of the Chinese mass-producing silver dollars, ASE's, and anything else of value. I have not really heard to much about the smaller denominations... Except that they are mass producing any and all KEY-DATES. I think that you got a good deal, and that those coins are only going to appreciate in value over time. I myself would have been extremely paranoid, and hesitant to pull the trigger on that deal just because of what I have heard about the fakes out there.

Can anyone help me out here? I imagine that for the experts, you can tell a fake just by looking at it, but I have been hearing since starting this venture that the fakes have been getting better and better looking and will even fake out the tests to smell out fakes. (magnet, weight, etc.) everytime I am in a coin shop, I ask the guys running the place, and it seems that even they have been fooled at least a handful of times...

Kleiner-did you have any reservations at all? If so, how did you put those to rest by authenticating them?

Thanks, happy hunting.

Wow, my kids and I found a 1949 S a few weeks ago. We have been CRHing for about a year. It is the only low mintage (<40 million) FDR dime that we have found. I guess we were lucky!
We still haven't found some high mintage ones like 1962 & 1963 philly.

thats a great rare find! you got a whole bunch of them too! great pick up

Hey RockDoc,

Don't worry, I am not in the least offended by your statement :laughing7:
To answer your questions, I did not have any reservations. I purchased 2 rolls of circulated dimes from an older gentleman who had been a coin collector for many years. If they had been uncirculated, I would have been suspicious. Also, I am not trying to brag but I own many of the 1949-S dimes and have since I was very young and they are one of my favorite coins. I am not saying that I am a professional but I believe I could easily spot out a fake. I have many grades from 1-66, I may not be able to spot a fake if it is a really high grade because I do not own many of those but I do not purchase them often and wouldn't expect someone to ever sell those for $3/dime. I can tell how many lines are on the rim, how far apart they should be, and can tell just as much detail on every letter, line, and the general look of every part, if someone fools me on this dime they deserve to take my money. I would guess the coinshop guys get fooled most often by coins they hardly ever see, it's coined the Blink effect, if it's something you think is too good to be true, even as a professional your mind will actually change what you are seeing to conform to what you want it to see. Gotta love that Biochemistry degree and Neuroscience minor that A&M has to offer  The only way to battle this is to go with your initial thought, in other words, what your mind made up before you even blinked, if you were skeptical then, it's possibly a fake.

This is my largest pickup, I got ~50 of them in the spring from my local coin dealer that had them all in a box for $2.75/coin and didn't know he even had them.

I think TAM is gonna make Ole Miss look good next year.... Atleast Ole Miss won't be in the cellar anymore :laughing7:

Better watch yourself buddy, haha, we're just trying to trick everybody into thinking we're terrible this year and we're actually going to wreck shop next year. Seriously though, every year we're supposed to do awesome we suck and every year we're supposed to suck we do awesome, so I hope that trend continues next year because we are supposed to suck.
