Found this penny. I know that steel pennies stopped in 43, but the year on this one is 44. Is it possible that materials got mixed in the factory or something? IMG_2120.JPG IMG_2119.JPG

If it is not a dug coin I would say just some toneing from laying next to a puddle of bleach, laundry detergent or some such.

I agree with ecmo, all sorts of outside influences can affect the patina of a coin. I just learned that smoke damage can make a nickel look like it wad buried for a hundred years.

Try a magnet . You will know right away .

Yeah, I tried a magnet. I wasn't sure if there just wasn't enough steel for the magnet to pick up on.

I would also like to note that on the "heads" side, that grey coloring is raised.

Thanks y'all.

if the grey is raised that suggests it was plated to fool someone into thinking it was a rare coin.

the 1944's were actually made from recycled shell casings i do believe....
