1933 World's Fair

Hi all,

Went detecting at a local park yesterday and did not do so well, so I decided to walk back to a dump and poke around for bottles. Found some so so stuff, but a metal find ended up making my day.

This is an ashtray that was apparently given out by Chrysler at the Century of Progress Worlds Fair in Chicago. I think it is either copper or bronze. I like it alot.

Anyone have any suggestions on cleaning it? Should I clean it at all?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Mr R

WTG on that relic. I would leave it just the way it is, it looks great!

Re: 1933 World's Fair

I would say normally not to clean it, yet the blue is corrosive and will continue to eat at it. Try some soap and water with out scub it and see if it removes that.
Might try the how to section for other advice.

Re: 1933 World's Fair

i agree with lostcauses the blue is corrosive. you could try to soak it in a little baking soda and water. then pat it dry, i wouldn't scrub it as the baking soda is abrasive and would scratch it. if the peice is worth anything cleaning it would depreciate the value. very nice find i love them old dumps too. ben.

Re: 1933 World's Fair

Great find: A vintage copper ashtray commemorating the 1933 Chicago World's Fair: A Century of Progress.

The ashtray is art deco inspired, as well as it should since it features the classic, art deco Chrysler Exhibition Hall, surrounded by the words "A Century of Progress, 1933, Chicago, Chrysler Motors, Plymouth, Dodge, DeSoto"
