Well, I didn't find it in the ground, but I do love it when this happens to me :)

My wife's grandmother works the local high school cafeteria, selling drinks and snacks. Earlier this week, a kid tried to pay with a buffalo nickel in his change. Knowing I collect old coins, she "bought" the nickel from him (probably gave him the snack for free) and passed the nickel through my wife to me. The day before my wife handed it to me, I was poking through my coin albums to figure out which one to start adding to, and decided on buffalo nickels. Usually the first thing I do at that point is look up the key dates. So when my wife hands me this buffalo nickel from her grandmother and I see "1931" pretty and clear on the front, I immediately flipped it over and saw that "S".

No..., I thought to myself aloud. My grandparents, whose house we were at when I was given the nickel, asked what was wrong. Beckoning them to wait, I used my phone to hit up eBay for 1931-S buffalo nickels. Sure enough, the Sold Listings showed my new nickel in worse condition than mine as having sold consistently at about $35. Once I saw that, I proudly showed off my new addition, explained its rarity, and we speculated that a key date in that condition (I later put it at some degree of EF/XF) was probably filched from a parent's or grandparent's coin collection.

Then I informed my wife that she should have her grandmother ask the kid if he has any more he'd like to part with :laughing7: 8-)

I'll post a picture when I get home. Wanted to get the story out there before I forgot :icon_sunny:
