1930's Farm Large Cent and Badge

I have waited until I found something nice before posting my first "Today's Find." A friend allowed me to detect his grandparent's 1930's era farm property. The property is near a railroad ( New York Central and Penn Central) and creek (named Deer Creek/and home to most notably, Iroqouis Indians). The property is on the outskirts of a town settled in 1854. The first couple of hours I found Lincolns and a 1968 quarter. I started to lose hope for the property. I then found:

- a very neat old brass badge (possibly from a comic strip in the 30's?)
-heavy wedge of some type?
-heavy old sign with a neat graphic of a fist holding a hammer (I couldn't find anything on the web to identify it?)

AND THEN, I concentrated my search to an area once used for a large flower garden by his grandmother. 85 on my ATP rang up and I commenced to digging for what I thought was sure to be another quarter. I pulled out a large and heavy coin. It was coated with dirt and age. I put it in my pocket thinking it was slug or a token, etc. After soaking it in some lemon juice and using a little vaseline, I discovered a large cent coin!! Originally, I thought the date was 1880 but they stoped in 1857. I am pretty sure the date is 1830. I am wondering if this is a "Matron" head? The large cents are very confusing with all the changes. The date fits in the "Coronet" years too. I am absolutely tickled as this is my oldest coin dug to date.

excellent finds. love that badge

Thanks for the post. Great to see another Hoosier. :occasion18:
Way to go on the LC and that cool looking badge.
Any snow in your area?
-MM-
(Hoosier from LaPorte )

I'll venture an opinion on it. 1830 Medium Letters variety Matron. Coinbook Large U.S. Cents/
Another guess on your container/sign piece is that it's an Arm & Hammer Logo. Nice condition on the coin. So many times those large cents come out as unidentifiable hunks of copper so enjoy the great find!

Ah, once a Hoosier, always a Hoosier. Thanks MM! Yes, in fact we did and it was 32 with a wind chill of below 20. I was looking forward to getting out this morning snow or no snow. I should have taken pics of the snow accumulating on the top of my coil, ha! As for any targets, I had to first clear a layer of snow and then leaves to apply shovel to sod and dirt.

That is a very beautiful large cent, nice detail, most of the ones I have seen are quite toasty, congrats!

Thanks Bzybee! I spent the last hour checking it out and came up with the same conclusion. I thought about Arm and Hammer but I all the logos I found showed a sledge hammer versus the claw. I saw your avatar and have to ask, our you a keep? I just completed my second year of keeping. I have a bee yard with 15 colonies so far.

I'm not a keeper but I did get stung then chased by quite a few angry yellow jackets this summer if that counts!
(always on very steep inclines those ground bees are nasty!)

Great hunt. Love the LC:icon_thumleft:

Awesome finds! The sign is totally cool, and the large cent is a great find, congrats!

Nice large cent and badge. That's my kind of detecting.

That coin is in AWESOME shape:occasion14: Watch that lemon juice though! Don't leave any coin in too long.

Thanks Creade, I figured that out the hard way the other day on some other items. I think I will stick with other, non-caustic methods from here on out.
