Since the word "progressive" has become a household item of conversation lately, I thought I would post an old button I dug a while back. It is solid bronze with plain back, so I don't know how it attached to anything, with portraits of Robert M. "Fighting Bob" La Follette and Burton K. Wheeler running against Coolidge.

La Follette was a disaffected Republican who broke ranks with the party to form his own "Progressive Party". 1924 was the first, last and ONLY time the Progressive Party ran a candidate for president or any other office. After losing to Coolidge, La Follette disbanded the party entirely, so 1924 was the only campaign button the party ever made.

La Follette and Wheeler did win one state in the Electoral College, Wisconsin, taking 13 electoral votes. A resounding defeat, but they came in better than the Communists and Socialists Workers who also had candidates in the race.
