Me and my boys have this new spot to hunt. It's an old farm house site that has been burnt down. We went out today and found a lot of trash, and a 1919 wheatie. I was just wondering what the chances of finding other coins there? Thanks guys!
I would think that the chances are good that you will find more but it will be hard going. Burned home sites are a pain because lots of the metals copper etc that you find will be melted and they will show up as coins when they arent. So it may mean lots of diging. Good luck
Sounds like it might be worth investing some time in Johnny. I'm hunting a farm house thats part of a ghost town and have found coins from 1978 back to 1883. Some time the trash can tell you as much as the coins. Good luck.
Someone in another thread suggested raking an area to remove some of the surface trash. Sometimes, there is so much that you might want to sift some spots. Its not as bad as it sounds. I use 1/4 inch hardware cloth in a frame. Since the house burned, there will be 1.2 million nails left in addition to the usual junk. But even scrap iron is worth something! Just my 2¢
I would say your chances are awesome! I would also see if you can determine other areas away from the house. You might find a good location where the clothes line might have been away from the debris. Also, pay attention to paths going to the barn or road, etc. Look for old trees or rocks.. since they may have been place where people have gathered.
If you do have the time.. to make many trips, I would break up your days between working the trash at the site and then working the outer areas. Rake is a great idea mentioned ealier. Sifter might come in handy.. it all depends on how much time/trips you can make to the site.
I would also suspect other opportunities there as well. You could go for privy digging, and also bottle hunting. Look for their old dump site. If you know the owners, see if you can find any old pictures of the property.
Sounds like you got a great site with hours of fun.
Hey guys! Thanks for all of the replies. I had the fever again last night so we went back out to the spot. Didn't get a lot done because it was late, rainy, and cold. We did find some old door hinges and a lot of nails and junk. No more coins tho. I also think that the debris might have been bulldozed away, does that affect my chances of finding coins? I can visit the site as much as I want.
Not if they didnt dig up the ground much unless there was something inside the house in that case they could have carried it out and gone but then that should also get rid of a lot of the junk. But then like one of the other posts said I would look farther out from the house site up to a hundred ft or so. I'm sure that being an old farm there would be out buildings around so dont forget to check them out really good also. Good luck and dont give up
Thanks for the posts guys.
First off we found an old Tombstone on the site. It's from 1856. So I researched the hell out of it and found the owner of the farm back then and found that not only did he have a house and many barns and sheds on the farm but he also had a flour mill. The mill was destroyed in a fire in 1860. We just have to find the foundations of these places and then I think we'll be in luck! We're going back out this weekend. Let me know what you think.
In 1860 the mill most probably would have been powered by water,if it was any size at all there would be a flume somewhere below where a creek was dammed to store water to turn a grist wheel....so you should find some evidenc where there is substatial fall or elevation.
Kansas, I completely forgot about mills being powered by water... dumb dumb dumb. There is a creek on the property and we've found a spot that might have been dug down, it's about 6-8 feet lower than the rest of the creek. I hope we're on to something! thanks!
I'm one of Johnny's "boys", and just thought I would add a little to the topic. My grandpa used to own this farm, but he couldn't afford to pay taxes on it anymore. My father and grandfather has rented the farm ever since. My dad found the tombstone Johnny mentioned about 2-3 years ago. The old house that he burned down around 20 years ago was across the lane from the field with the tombstone, but it was pretty much straight west of the house. I'm assuming there was another house in the field owned by the man who owned the property back around 1850. He had 9 children, 6 of which died in infancy. The tombstone my dad found was for a 10 month old baby, so we are assuming there is more. I highly doubt the house my dad burned down was owned by this man, as it wasn't that old. The creek Johnny also mentioned is pretty much dried up now, but from what I can remember there is a long trench about 8-10 feet deep, with a small pond at the end. This would have been really close to where my dad found the tombstone, so there is a possibility of the mill being somewhere close. Anyway, we are planning on heading out there this weekend, I just hope we dont run across any caskets.
If u have alot of surface junk , nails metal etc, go to a roofing supply or home depot and get u a roofers magnet, looks like a push mower 2 wheels bout 2ft apart with a magnet that rides on the axle between them, it will pickup alot of the surface junk.
theres more coins there for sure. its just that they are probably hiding amongst all of that trash. if you can try a small 4 or 5 inch coil for your detector, that would really help to get between the trash. good luck with it!
Thanks for the posts...
we hit it again last weekend. No coins....
We dug a lot of trash, old hinges, old lock plates and stuff like that. Also found some melted lead.
Nothing to significant.
Have a turn of the century school house i'm going to try and get permission to hunt next.
