Found this at an old house site that has produced alot of wheats. Look at the far side of the 8. Looks like a 1 or a slash at a slight angle. It is raised like the date and appears to be part of the strike.
It's called a cud. A small area where the die cracked or was worned away. Although not dramactic older coins in nice condition with errors are very collectable due to thier age and rarity. Look over every coin very cafefully and you'll find more errors.
A cud is part of the die actually breaking away, usually from the edge. This looks more like a die gouge or something similar. Either way, its pretty common. Unusual and worth hanging onto, but common.
