1917 SLQ on Pawn Stars last week...

Did anybody else see this? Maybe I'm missing something here, but it appeared to be a mid-grade 1917P Variety 1 SLQ. The guy was asking $500 for it, but ended up getting $1000 for it after being told it was worth $1200-1700. I know these "reality" shows aren't exactly "real" but I was sitting here yelling at my TV. I dug this exact coin about three weeks ago and it's worth about $100 (non-dug). Heck, even at MS63 condition it's only worth about $400. Maybe I should take my whole collection out there and retire....

I didn't see it but I do know they inflate what the values are for the average joe to get excited over what they have. Remember its only worth what someone will pay for it. Now take yours out and sell it to someone that doesn't have a clue, and watches pawn stars, for that amount.

I remember seeing an old 1792 George Washington "penny" that was struck in England on that show. The thing was worth maybe $500 in it's condition, but he ended up getting about $750 when he was told it was worth $1000-$1200. I just don't understand...

A coworker of mine is an avid gun collector and he says the same kinds of things about the guns they feature on the show. Makes me wonder if you were to take the same coins in when it wasn't going to be on TV if you'd get the same amount.

I watched the show and I do believe that the expert did grade it at a strong ms65 and said when graded it could grade at ms66 with FH.

Must have been a different episode - there was no expert called in on this one. He said he was going to have his guy look at it and grade it, but the seller had to "go to class" or something and needed a sale on the spot so Rick just eyeballed it but never threw out a grade. Sure didn't look in that good of shape to me. It wasn't terrible, but certainly not mint state.

He said he was going to have his guy look at it and grade it, but the seller had to "go to class" or something and needed a sale on the spot so Rick just eyeballed it but never threw out a grade. Yeah later in the same episode he had an expert come in and evaluate the coin. He gave it at least a ms65 maybe ms65 grade with FH

Hmm I'll have to watch that again. I probably turned it off after the initial piece! Either way....sure didn't look that high quality to me!

I have a PCGS MS62 FH 1917 Type1 SLQ that I bought in April 2015 for $300. It's the best looking Type 1 I've ever seen.
