Went to a very small park next to a marina and boat ramp. No sooner than I set my delta 4000 to go then I get a solid dime at 84. Typical ID for a clad dime. 2" down there it is. Crusty but expected around sand and salty environment. Pop it in the pocket and briskly continue down to brush line separating shore and cut grass area. Nothing but a sinker. Oh well. By now a few carloads of visitors have pulled up and I just left.
Well I said lets look at that dime. I rub a little through the crust but it reveals a mercury head. Hey now. Can't tell a date or anything from the crust. But from others I've dug it looks a little more worn than say a 30's or 40's.
I say to myself. What if? You know. The holy grail of dimes. Nah.
Get it home lightly wash it enough to pull out my loupe for a looksee.
Check the back. There's the S mintmark. Check the front. There is 191?. Oh really. Can't make the last number out. Oh I got put a little more dawn on this a get an answer. By now I got my fingers crossed. Check it after dabbing it dry. And it's a 7.
@%&%!!!!!!!
Oh well. Oldest silver to date and for a five minute scout of new grounds not bad. Maybe, just maybe the next signal will be that one. Keep on swingin and keep on diggin.
By the way the typical ID for silver dime has been 85. I guess all the crust fooled the delta 4000. But it put it in such a tight range that it could not be ignored. Glad I dug it.
