1916.........Merc, engraved pewter spoon, and a "LONE" headstone in the woods.

NO "D"! BUMMER!! Spoon says "........&SONS....SHEFFIELD". Can anyone date and tell me what the marks are on the back? The headstone was pretty kool. SGT. SOLOMON HEATH....1st Berkshire Regt. Mass. Militia Rev. War. He died in 1776. Known as "Ashley's Regiment of Militia", it was only active from 1776-1777. They were called up in July 1777, and fought at Saratoga, under Gen. Gates, at the Battle of Bemis Heights. Seeing a lone headstone, out in the middle of the woods, was different. Although I have seen family plots near cellar holes, a Rev. War soldiers stone was different.

Man what a bummer but hey its still silver. For the tomb stone better report it to the nearest historic society so they can honor him on our holidays. If you go by there again tell him thanks for this great country he fought for. :headbang:

sweet headstone find. I found a group of them in the woods last spring and it freaked me out a little. turned out one of them belonged to john lewis who died in 1657.

Good deeds could be done by posting gravestone pics to www.findagrave.com

The company that made your spoon was Rodgers and Sons and they set up a factory in Sheffield, England. They have been making straight edge razors since 1682 but from what I found they started making cultery in 1871 and on through the early 1900's. So I would place the date range somewhere in there. Nice Finds :icon_thumleft:

I see an application for membership in the Sons of the American Revolution that states that Solomon Heath was born in Coventry, CT 31 Mar 1741 and died at Tyringham, Berkshire County, MA 6 Dec 1776. He was a "Sergeant in Capt. Noah Lankton's Company of Massachusetts troops under Col. Mark Hopkins (1st Berkshire Company) Regiment, from 15 Jul 1776 to 4 Aug 1776. The company marched on expedition to the Hudson Highlands of New York by order of Brig. Gen. John Fellows." That is as it is written on the SAR application. From Volume 7 of Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War, Solomon Heath served 21 days from 15 Jul to 4 Aug 1776, when he was discharged. At this point I cannot tell whether his death was attributable to his military service - nothing other than the fact that it happened just months after his discharge would indicate that it was.

Nice finds Todd! :icon_thumleft:

The headstone is definitely not "period".....styling is much later in the 1800's, probably a replacement stone or a memorial stone, body might not even be there.. :dontknow:

Nice job getting out in February, quite the mild winter huh?

HH all!

I was going to say the same thing till I saw Greg's reply, just seems too good of shape and the lettering to detailed to be where it is for a long period of time, I know most of the original headstones of my ancestors that I researched and found that died in the 1700s are either unreadable totally or barely readable with a tracing or chalking.
