My bottle dump keeps on giving! Eyeballed a 1916-D Barber quarter and a 1935 Merc. Both were very grungy, but they cleaned up okay. Also found ten wheaties, a new record for me. Dates are 1918, 1919(2), 1939, 1940(4) and 1941(2).

I found the wheaties with my metal detector, but not in the conventional manner. Since there are literally thousands of bottle caps there, detecting this dump is tough. I can't seem to discriminate out the bottle caps. So I tried scooping up the dirt into a small plastic bin and then running it over my upside down coil resting on the ground. Works great! It ignores the bottle caps now. Weird!

The total for this dump is now 25 coins, all dated between 1910 and 1942. I've found 18 wheaties, 4 Mercs, 2 Barber quarters and a SLQ.

Here's a few pics:

Nice going on your wheats and silver. That is one nice looking barber. Hope to find one soon.

Barber quarters are one of my favorite coins. Nice finds Tim.

Great finds! That one hunt found you almost exactly what I have for old coins.

Congratulations on the silver finds!

Good job on the silvers n wheats, great hunt!

Nice silver, I've only found one silver quarter so far in 2 years, looking for that Barber and many more.

Thanks, guys! I'm going back there again today, but it's hit or miss. If I find a large cache of bottle caps, the coins always follow. I believe there's a link between the coins and the bottle caps. I think they swept up the bottle caps every night and also swept up a few coins that fell off the bar as well. Since the whiskey bottles I've found are from 1940 to 1943, that's at least three years of swept up caps and coins! There must be a lot more coins waiting to be found!

I had only found 2 silvers this year before I stumbled upon this dump. I hadn't found a silver coin in almost three months until this spot came along. You never know where you're going to hit the jackpot. I was just having fun digging the whiskey bottles when I spotted a wheatie and a Barber quarter one day. That was the end of my bottle digging!

Vanzant was with you today

Ronnie used to search for soda bottles as a kid, so you're definitely right! I'm sure he did a lot of dump digging in his youth.

Yes he did; then he traded those bottles in for some dough and If memory serves - he gave it all to Curtis Lowe. :headbang:

NICELY done! :icon_thumleft: If only the Barber date was on your Merc!

WTG Tim. You sure do have the eye for finding coins. That barber is in way beeter shape than the one I dug late winter.

Nice! Sweet silvers and wheats! Congrats!

Your detector is probably reading the caps as "soil" and nulling them out.

love those barbers

Went back today and got 4 more wheaties, a 1920, a 1937, a 1939 and a 1941. Not bad, but no silver! Oh well, I'll try again tomorrow...
