Hi All,
Trying to catch up on my pictures of my finds. In the town of Benicia, there is a Clock Tower, that during 1860 to 1950s was used by military for storage among other things. In 1912, this building caught fire, and over 15 million rounds of ball cartridges, 34,000 stand of rifles, an undetermined number of small arms, uniforms, shoes, blankets and leggings were burned.
Now just imagine the exploding bullets flying everywhere!!!!
I have only spent about three hours there, and almost no garbage was found, but there are many bullets, exploded cases (with primers intact) and other shrapnal.
In the pictures, mostly exploded casings although a few of them did not explode, but bullet is in the case, just badly melted.
There are also 30 caliber anti-personel rounds (the skinny pointed rounds), then there is one 30 cal that is not pointed and is longer then the rest, two 9mm or close it that, and then there are a couple that remind me of 3ringers, but no rings.
Next, is what I believe to be fragments from a cannonball. Then we have one small rivet that looks like it was meant for a leather strap with a hole to be pushed onto it. There is also a big rivet, don't know what this was for, maybe a saddle? there are also a few square nails.
Then there is a hook looking peice, maybe a coat hook?
I plan on taking more time to search for other things that were thrown, but it is hard as some areas are just full of bullets and bullet fragments, can't move the coil without making it go crazy. I know that I can play with my discrimination, but I like to dig everything, and then figure out the unknown objects idenity, and how it got there. Good BrainFood.....
Enjoy! Also added a 1912 picture of the burnt building, and a 1990 picture of it. (rebuilt with only two floors instead of 3).
