1912 Barber Dime, a Silver Roosie, 5 Wheats, and the Sheriff's Dept.

A buddy of mine, Dave, and I headed out today, back to the burnt house where I found the little pink car, '45 Merc. and the 1918 wheatie. After a little research, I found out that the house is circa. 1860s, built by William Meek for one of his sons. It's about a block away from the Meek Mansion in Hayward.

Anyway, we spent a good deal of time in the backyard, and along the side of the house where you can't be seen from the street. We decided to save the front yard for last, just in case we got kicked out. All was good, I managed a 1944, 1951 and 1952 wheatie from the backyard, and so after an hour or so, it was getting late so we decided to step out in the open in the front yard and see how long we lasted.

As soon as we got out front, it started getting good!! I grabbed a quick 1920 and 1926 wheatie, a 1951s Roosie, and a nice 1912d Barber dime! :) Dave started finding older stuff, too, and made the best find of the day!! A 1923 Walking Liberty Half-Dollar!!!!! :D

Well, needless to say, we didn't last 10 minutes in the front yard before Alameda County's Finest showed up. The first responder was a female officer, followed soon thereafter by a male officer, and about 5 minutes later, a Alameda County Sheriff SUV shows up (transport, just in case we were going to jail). Wouldn't you know it??!!?? Just as it was gettin' good!!! >:(

So we got the third degree for about fifteen minutes. What is it with female cops, anyway??!!?? ??? Man!!! She was giving us the riot act!! :o Goin' on and on about how trespassing is an arrestable offence, etc., etc. "Is this your house?", "No, Maam....". "Then why are you on on the property?", "Looking for old coins, Maam....". "Did you know the house was burnt down by arsons?", "No, I did not, Maam.....". "Who gave you the right to enter somebody else's property?", "Nobody, Maam....". "Have you ever been arrested?", "Yes Maam, about 30 years ago...". "What for?", "Contributing to the delinquency of a minor when I was 18 years old..." This went on and on, with the male backup officer just standing there the whole time with this little smile on his face..... ;)

Finally, after running our ID's, and determining we were not a threat to society, they decided not to run us in.... ;D ;D ;D

So, I've told you all where this site is now, it's offically open season for silver there, so, go have at it.... the front yard is especially good...... maybe a few seated's there!!! ::)

Oh, and by the way...... "Dave, keep your hands out of your pockets and out where I can see them!" :o

Rick

Nice digs

See if you can get permission from the owner.

All they can say is NO.

Exactly, get permission and go back to the place. Then when the cops show up you can show them the permission slip (or play the phone recording) and let them know who's looking foolish now. Man, it's not a good idea to go onto private property without permission, but if the place burned down, what harm can there be? Somebody tattled on you. You need stealth gear and nighvision goggles.

very cool story there man 8) just don't talk back at the girl cop :o , have fun hunting...

Re: 1912 Barber Dime, a Silver Roosie, 5 Wheats, and the Sheriff's Dept.

Nice finds, but it just goes to show that you should always have permission before you detect any place. If you don't, it could possibly lead to laws in your area that would prevent detecting on town properties too. Lance

The police in this case were just doing their jobs and YOU were 100% in the wrong! You are very fortunate that at the very least you weren't fined for criminal trespass.

Nice finds though! Get permission first!!!!

better to have found something and then kicked out then to have never found anything at all.... Good job!

The cops were just blowing smoke. There is no way they could have made an arrest without the actual owner's complaint. Nosy neighbors don't count. In Kansas, property must be posted 'No Trespassing' or the owner must personally order trespassers off the property before an arrest is possible. Unless the cops had a complaint from the owner, they should have left you alone after checking you out.

100% Correct....Very lucky you didnt get to go see the judge.

Like I posted the other day, We had a great burnt down house from the 1800's to detect with permission. We were the only one who asked the owner for permission up to that point. Got in the back yard and it was plug city! I was very bummed since I was actually the only one that keep it legal! :'(

So that means I can come over to your house while you are working and dig in your yard when you are not there to tell me to leave?  And it is perfectly legal and there is nothing you can say or do about it because you are not there? Then when you call the police they are going to tell you that you can not file a report because you were not home at the time? Here in Oregon they are very clear...."To enter or remain unlawfully" Unless you are an invited guest, i wouldnt be hanging out in peoples yards digging holes.

Not irrelevant at all! Private property is prvate property. We cannot make distinctions based on the condition of the property over whether we should ask permission or not...we should ALWAYS ask permission or you will see this great hobby legislated out!

i know your right but if someone lived in that house thats a whole different ball game thats all my point was

thats all :-\

Re: 1912 Barber Dime, a Silver Roosie, 5 Wheats, and the Sheriff's Dept.

I agree on getting the permission first. My cousin has property in the woods that has no house on it. He intends to move onto the property as he has a well and power pole there. Someone keeps going over there and stealing his well house equipment and riding four wheelers on it destroying the landscaped areas. He even has signs posted to keep out! It just frustrating to land owners to have people on their property without permission. That's why there are laws guys!

Sorry that your hunt got busted up, but at least you did'nt get into major trouble.

Nice finds!

That Barber is in great shape for her age. Sorry the cops showed up and busted your hunt.

You need to get permission to hunt on private property. The next time the cops show up without permission, you may spend time in the back of a car or worse. Just my two cents.

Re: 1912 Barber Dime, a Silver Roosie, 5 Wheats, and the Sheriff's Dept.

Nice Barber! Must have been a slow crime day; a response is one thing, a 15 minute lecture is another.

I understand what you are saying! Who the heck is going to care if I MD in the yard of a burnt down house ??? ??? However, it is still private property reguardless of the condition and needs to be treated as such. I just dont want to see anyone here get into trouble!

I am all about finding virgin places to hunt also....but lets keep it legal ;D
