1899 Quarter, A Real "High"
I found an old hidden park that doesn’t show up on any city maps. I simply got on google maps and panned across my area in the satellite mode. I hunted for about an hour and a half at the park, hitting a bit of clad. Finally, I found a fake turquoise ring. As I walked back to meet up with my partner, I hit a signal and picked up a piece of metal. Not recognizing it, I put it into my pouch. A few steps later I hit another signal and picked up another piece of metal. I then realized that these fit together. I screwed the pieces together and showed my partner my find. She said, “Oh, that’s a marijuana pipe”. I took one whiff and Yep! That’s exactly what it is! It was only after I made it home that I stopped to think of what would have happened if I was stopped by law enforcement. I was definitely in possession of drug paraphernalia. I can just hear it now, “Sure you found this while metal detecting”. Following a bit of research, I realized that I was missing the spiral piece from inside the pipe (supposed to cool your smoke) so I went back the following day, thinking if I found the missing piece, I could clean it all up and legally sell it as a tobacco pipe. I never found the missing piece but hit a nice quarter signal under a tree. I leaned down, parted the grass, and brushed aside the leaves to see, lying on the surface, an 1899 Barber Quarter! Finally I made it into the 19th century. Thanks for looking!
