Hey detcord,

My latest (April issue)Coin World/Coin Values magazine
lists that coin at $750.00 in MS-65.
Then you have to include it being graded also, so that would add to the price.
Of course that pricing is subjective. I have found over the years that guidebooks are just that.Guides.
Anything you sell is only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it.
Your best bet would be to check out Ebay or some similar site and see what they are selling for.

A great coin !!!

Here's a link to the Barber dimes at PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service):
http://www.coinuniverse.com/prices/frame.chtml?type=date&filename=barber_dime
They list the value as $745 as of 5/27/06.

I use the PCGS website frequently to track some of my collection. They update their values frequently.
Click on the PCGS logo at the top of the screen if you would like to go to their main page so you can check out some of the other coins you got from your uncle.
That's one great coin!! Thanks for sharing the pix.

Hi,
This is not disparaging toward NGC at all. Please understand. This is just a reality when it comes to slabbed coins. PCGS coins are usually priced a little higher because they have a reputation of being a little more conservaitve with grading. What that translates into is a slightly lower value for a coin in an NGC slab.

NGC although a very reputable grader sells for just a little bit less than a PGCS slab. So compare by looking for other NGC slabbed coins. It is not a good comparison to go by a PCGS price.

Have Fun,
Bill

Coin world's values are inflated severly, in my opinion. And that is a more common date coin, with 16 million made. MS 65 is pretty good grade, but I see the MS63 lists for about 150. I can't see that big of a jump, generally speaking.

My best guess would be in the 300-400 dollar range is what you could realistically get for it. Best bet would be to call several dealers and ask. They use the greysheet for pricing, which is updated weekly.

I see a PCGS value of $745. The reason the jump is so big is because as you get into MS 65 category of old coins, the population #'s go down dramatically. That is why the high end is always MS 65 and above unless of course you are speaking of something like the 1880-O Morgan which just in MS 64 will bring you $2000 and in MS 65 it jumps to $26,000. There is only a handful that have graded at MS 65 with none finer. One needs to take into account all this when purchasing coins. Some of the low mintage CC morgans are valued at only a few hundred due the high population of high grades. I believe this will all be shaken out in the end but it will take several years. Also NGC is very reputable right up there with PCGS. Back to your barber, with a population of only 400 coins or so in the MS category 60-70 I would say it is a rare coin and worth holding on to. Hope this helps.

I have to agree with richg. The difference in price between grades can be huge. With that said, the PCGS guide is as was said before, just a guide. I might be wrong, but I don't think they buy coins just grade them right? Anyways, that is a really nice coin that is in almost perfect condition. Keep it no matter what it's worth.
