What a lucky find! Congrats!

Cool finds, I love seeing those old Canadian large cents. Where do you get the $1200 valuation from? My Charlton Standard shows the 1896 penny values from $3 (G-4) up to $1500 (MS-65 red). I think your coin would fall in the $5-$7 range. There are a few varieties of this coin, worth up to $300 in really nice condition. You could check to see if it's either of the "very far and very high 6", or the "very far and slightly high 6" varieties. Again, nice finds.

Use some NIc a dent on the date it will restore it

the pic does not do it justice, it is very nice, not pristine, was dirty, I have not dared try and clean it, but the details are great, I just looked it up on google and the image I looked under said up to 1200.00, I actually thought it would fall in the 70-100 range, believe me the pic does not do it justice, there is no damage and the rim is perfect, just dirt

The chart below shows the values from the NGC price guide (1876-1901 Canada Cent KM 7 Prices & Values | NGC). The 1896 is a common date, with 2,000,000 minted. I'd like to see where you are finding a value of up to $1200, since this shows up to $150 and that's for a mint state example. Keep in mind that although any coin that was dug can have a lot of detail, it has been in the ground and, particularly copper and nickel coins, have what is termed "environmental damage". That is the green color you see on the copper coins. Their normal color would be a bright golden color to a brown color and any combination between depending on the amount of circulation and handling they have seen. Because of that, the value is diminished by at least half. With all that said, it's always exciting to find these old, large Canadian cents and you should enjoy your find! I always do and don't worry about the value. Particularly since it's your first, it should be priceless anyway. Great job! Now go out and find more.

Ok, the chart I pasted in didn't show up, but if you go to the page in the link, it's there.

Gotta love those buffalos. Been finding a few myself recently CRHing. The only thing I can figure is people mistake them for the newer Jefferson ones. Gotta love that.

Thank you for sharing your hunt and those pictures
