This coin was purchased for a customer of mine to finish his set. I will leave the the price out.....
I will be sending it to NGC for a regrade. Nice coin no matter what the grade ends up being.
Just thought that I would post a few pics before I send it away.

I'm not positive, but the mint mark does not look right to me. According to VAMworld, the S should be of the medium variety, set upright, as in this picture:

Unfortunately, NNC is not a respected grading service, and I feel that the coin could POSSIBLY be a counterfeit.

Thank You for the reply but I must disagree....

The first pic is a better one of the mint mark.
The next few are of a diognostic die scratch through the "T" in LIBERTY.
Also you will see a link to a site showing the same thing.

Thanks for the feedback, VPR

Now thats is a nice coin! Lets us know what it comes back at! I wonder which number of the hundred thousand minted it was off the press? That coin is worth more than one third the price I paid for my house! Unreal

Thanx for the comments. I only wish it was MINE !!
It feels nice "As a serious coin collector" to be able to see and handle a coin of this $$$$$.
I passed up about a dozen or so before I found the right coin in the right price range for this gentleman putting together a rather nice retirement.
Now most of the important coins are in place and only have the more common coins to buy.

Still looking for an 1889-CC.....

Happy hunting, VPR

We finally got arround and sent this coin to NCS. I thought that it had been cleaned, so NGC wont grade.
Here it is.... Still a VERY NICE coin!!

Thanx for lookin' VPR

Oh well :)

Are those your Granite counters?

nice.....after seeing it in the NNC holder, before scrolling down, the first thing I said to myself was 'that's an AU-50 at best:" (and also knowing that company to grade high) and then I was pleased at my grading as I scrolled down to the new pics and saw it was XF detail and from a much more accurate and reputable company.

What really surprised me was the "Polished" designation, I wasn't thinking "cleaned" at all but maybe it looks different in hand.

In any event, very nice coin, on the very low side of "cleaned" in my opinion and more importantly it helps add a wonderful key date to a customers collection.

HH all!

Greg

thats what i noticed right off that back. "polished" maybe since it is such a coin, cleaned would condem it. polished sounds much more proper. ;D
awesome either way

When I saw what coin and what holder it was in, my first inclination was "cleaned". BTW "polished" and "cleaned" mean about the same to a collector, only polished connotes a more rigorous effort. It's still the key coin to the most collected series in US Numismatics and demand outstrips supply. You could potentially realize between $5K~$7K.

About NNC ... this is what's called a self-slabber (or basement slabber). They prey on those who trust the imprinted grade on a holder rather than the coin within. Most of the NNC coins were sold by an EBay seller named "Centsles". Many of his offerings were for key coins with problems that weren't noted on the slab, i.e. cleaned. And all were overgraded by at least four grades (MS 66 = MS 62). My advice to any others contemplating a NNC-slabbed coin ... if it's a key date, it is a problem coin ... all others deduct at least four grading points.

I think Centsles sleeps with the fishes these days. ::)

I think that the coin was "polished" years ago and has had some time to recolor a bit. The longer ago the cleaning the harder it is to see.

My recomendation to anyone buying coins of any significance is to simply know what you are doing. Know what you are looking at and have a sense of how to grade a coin. Look at many coins in different grades and dont buy the first coin that passes by.

I will not buy a coin sight unseen, (ebay, mail order, etc) without a return policy.

The best advice is to be carefull and know what you are buying.

This particular coin now rests in a bank box as part of someones retirement. ( I bet it will do better than my 401K )

Thanks again, VPR
