Hello everyone! How was your Memorial Day weekend?!

I actually wasn't planning on going detecting at all this weekend ~ we had family come stay with us all weekend. They all left for home early this afternoon and I planned on just relaxing at home. At about 3:pm my 13 year old daughter Lexi was so bored that she begged me to take her somewhere (anywhere!) ~ see, she's been grounded a week now for sneaking out with her friends after midnight last weekend. So I asked her if she wanted to go detecting with me ~ I was half joking thinking she'd say "no way!" ~ but she actually said "OK!". Before we went detecting she wanted to hike up Skinner's Butte in downtown Eugene Oregon. So after the short hike we were going to go detecting on the grounds of the University Of Oregon ~ on the way there we were driving through an older neighborhood and I noticed that the easement infront of an old house was all torn up ~ all the grass was removed leaving just dirt! So I gave her a quick lesson on how to use my XLT and let her try it out. I had her take off the head phones so I could listen along with her. She was swinging the coil and she had several targets ringing out at her ~ she didn't know what to do, so I took the detecter from her to show her how to separate the tartgets ~ after I swung the coil a few time I decided to dig the best sounding target first ~ it was a 1897 Indian Head Cent!! Unfortunately for Lexi she didn't get to use the detector much after that ~ I was too excited to see what else was in the dirt ~ but she wasn't too disappointed. She had just as much fun watching me detect and helping me dig just like when she was 5 years old.

Here's everything we dug today:

1887 V nickel
1928-S Buffalo nickel
1897 Indian Head Cent
1910-S Wheat Cent
Eight more Wheat cents ~ 20-S, 24-S, 29-S, 34-D, 34-D, 44-S, 46-S, & 47-S
1 clad quarter
5 clad dimes
1 nickel
12 Memorial cents
lapel pin marked STERLING

Thanks for looking!
Neil

I didn't think you could resist the urge to go detecting for a while.......even though you HAD good intentions.... any excuse will do. Congrats on the teriffic finds
The close-ups of the dates on the coins is something you don't see much of on this site.....like it. See you soon HH Gold Nuggets :icon_jokercolor:

Wow, if your daughter is doing that at 13, just imagine in three more years! ;D :D

Funny story. She must be really desperate to go detecting. ;D :D

Some nice finds but is she "hooked"? :D

Yeah, I hope she learns her lesson now and it doesn't get worse!

No, I don't think she'll ever get "hooked" on detecting ~ it was just an chance for her to get out of the house. She would have probably done just about anything to get out of here for a few hours ~ she's going crazy! That will teach her!

Neil, man that sounds like a great day with some fantastic finds.

i like the close-ups of the dates on the coins. how do you do that ???

The way I do pictures is probably a lot different than everyone else. I've got one of those old school WebTV units. I bought it about 11 years ago and the thing is still going strong! It's one of the second generation units (WebTV PLUS) that you can plug in your camcorder into it ~ I can freeze a frame and send it in an e-mail. I send the picture to my PC and save the picture there. The cool thing is that the camcorder isn't a digital ~ it's an old analog camcorder! It works great!

As for the close-up pictures ~ I have a stereo microscope. I just hold the camcorder up to the eye piece on the microscope and I can get very close-up pictures!

awesome finds your v nickel is so close to a key date I saw the guy who got the 1885 the other day and was remembering my 1886. so did the 7 jump right out at you or did you have to look for it cause i thought i had a 1885 until i cleaned it off a little better it made the find that much funner. I will sure try to find a worthy post this week.. Kip

Yeah, I could see the date 1887 plain as day as soon as I dug it. I wish it was a 1885! Oh well! This is the oldest nickel I've dug. Before this one was the 1901 V 5c that I dug in Porter Park in Rexburg Idaho in 2001 (that was my first V nickel too!).
