Hi all. Did my weekly 5 boxes of dimes and 2 of nickels and found 3 Rosie's, 2 war nicks and 4 buffaloes. Also made a couple more trips to banks looking for halves and cwr of dimes and nickels. Picked up one 40% out of $8.00 in halves and got a mix of mwr and cwr. $175 in dimes and $80 in nickels. I was very surprised to find the V nick in a cwr. Also got a buff out of another cwr. Don't know how people can wrap these up and not notice or don't care. Also in a mwr of dimes I found a silver dime that is the most worn out, thinnest coin I remember seeing. The obverse is worn completely smooth and the reverse I can just faintly make out what looks like a wreath. I'm having trouble getting good pics with my iPhone. I'm posting a pic of this weeks finds but I need to get a better one of the mystery dime. HH

That's my second V nick. The other is 1905. I've found two IH's also. Keep at it. Never know when something unusual is going to pop out of a roll.

I rotated your picture for you. Hope you don't mind. Great find on the early V nickel!

Post the mystery coin in the "What is It" forum.

Will do sag. Just got some more pics. I'm thinking it's a barber.

Dominican Republic 10 centavos, 90% silver. 1937-1961 type.

Like this:

I can see the "Patria" over the shield on your coin.

What type of V nick is it? Type 1 doesnt say "cents" at the bottom, Type 2 does. Type 2 is worth more but Type 1 has a much lower mintage.

Yeah, thats the same type I have. It's also my oldest coin and I found it back in may I think. It's the oldest nickel you can find in a MWR that I know of. I know sheild nickels are older but they are a little smaller and I think any machine would reject it because of that reason. As far as CWR go, I've never heard of someone finding a sheild in a roll before. Congrats! I personally like this version better. The story behind it is better, if you didn't know, people used to gold plate them and pass it off as solid gold since there was a gold coin with a similar design. That's why they changed it half way through the year and every year since then had the word "cents" under the V on the back.

There was not a similar design in gold. Since the coin was new, many people would fall for thinking it was a new design of gold coin, when it was really a new nickel.

mercury1- Can you read the date using a loupe at the bottom of the Dominican coin?

There was a similar design, it was the 5 dollar liberty half eagle. The obverse features "Lady liberty" facing left with 13 stars around the edge. Their diameters were both very close as well, I think only a mm apart...only somewhere around 3-4 grams weight difference too. Minted between 1839 and 1907. Here is a link to what it looked like:

I knew about that coin, it just doesn't seem very similar to me in design, other than having Liberty

It's very close in size weight and design, and 5 bucks in 1883 was worth a lot more than it is now. Some people probably hadn't seen enough half eagles to be able to tell the difference. Enough people were getting fooled by it, to the point where the US mint added the word "cents" to the bottom of the coin. Any time you read about the type one 1883 v nick being gold plated, there will usually be something about the liberty half eagle.

Sag, no I can't make anything out on the front of the coin. It's worn smooth.
