1880's jail

went to this old jail this weekend and detected, there is not much there to detect and I had already hit it before with my brother with no luck, TONS of trash and a few newer pennies and if I recall one newer dime?
Went back this weekend and put on the small coil to hunt since this place is overwhelmed with trash, hunted for a few hours only turning up a few more pennys.

How can someone hunt a place like this and not turn up anything good, we have already taken out a LOT of trash so should be getting to the deeper stuff and with all that trash wouldnt you think it probably had never been detected before? and even if it had been detected before with that much trash they couldnt have gotten everything?

Re: 1880's jail

Cool looking site! Would sure like to see whats under that street.
Are you finding any old junk there, or is it all modern?
I have to agree with Flip. Chances are its been detected for many years, but still worth doing again slowly. Nothing is ever totally hunted out.
Good luck there.

Re: 1880's jail

Okay, here's a suggestion. Now, you won't do this, but here it goes anyway.

Find someone in your area who owns a Nautilus detector. The best for this test would be the IIB or IIBa.

If there is still anything there, the Naut will find it. These machines can totally ignore trash and have been known to sound on eagle buttons at 17 inches deep.

Once again, you won't believe this but this is what would tell the true story of your site.

I've been THing since 1968 and even before that time. I've owned so many detectors from the very deepest US made to those imported. Finally I bought one brand I never bought over the years because I listened to those who said they are too heavy, too noisy, too too.

I'm really ticked-off! Those guys fed me a line of crap! The Nautilus is absolutely unbelievable! I'm re-hunting spots I couldn't even find a pulltab at anymore and I'm digging a good find out of about every 3rd hole!

I've been having problems with my knee lately and this has kept me out of the field for a bit. BUT, sometimes I sneak out into my own backyard and dig a few nice relics.

Okay, there you have it. You won't do this but now I feel better because I told somebody. Heck, I'd love to hunt that site but live in Michigan. I'll bet I'd take 2 or 3 great digs out of it.

Re: 1880's jail

I would wait till spring and detect the rear of the old Building! mabe you will have better luck! HH

Re: 1880's jail

I agree in the spring the ground will be wetter and the halo effect will be greater making those deep coins seem bigger to the detector than they are.

Re: 1880's jail

That frustrating, eh mikey? I usually get too frustated and just move on, but you're really working that site. Good luck.

Great pictures. :)

Re: 1880's jail

Another thought- just because its old doesn't necessarily mean it has coins. How many picnics, carnivals, chatauquas, revival meetings, etc. were held around this old jail? A jail just doesn't seem like a good place for coins to me. Neat to look at, lots of history I bet.... but coins may not be abundant.

Good point! What would you think would be found there?

Re: 1880's jail

thanks for the posts guys, badger I love your suggestion but I dont know anybody with a nautilius... i wish i did.

what did I expect to find there? I dont go into anywhere with to high of hopes but I figured i would pull something out of there that is a little older, maybe not even a coin but SOMETHING?? there is a back door to the places and i am sure there was an out house or two in its life time, how about taking prisoners out back now and then or the sherriff taking a break out back, or out front for that matter, you would think SOMETHING from 1880's or newer would be around there, I mean I have only been doing this for a year and a half but I have hunted a lot of sites, some better than others but I have never put as much time in to ANY place and came away with less than a quarters worth of clad and the rest absolutely junk.
I dont know what the deal is with this place but to this point (i havent given up yet) it is by far the worst place I have hunted and I just dont buy the story it was hunted out 25 years ago, i have taken a LOT of junk out of there and there is still MORE, I doubt a machine from 25 years ago, with this much junk at the site took all the good finds if there is any.

anyhow... enough rambling, this place just has me stumped and feeling beat down, thank you guys for your posts and inspiration.

Re: 1880's jail

Sites like that ARE tough, I know..... I hope you do come up with SOMETHING for all the effort you've put in. You're right about it not being hunted out if there was that much junk there.

Here's a suggestion- put the metal detector away and prod around for bottles, maybe? You would think there'd be a dump nearby, at least.

Mike...my post was in response to jeffro. I was wondering what he thought would be there. I would have to agree with you on something good being there.

Re: 1880's jail

I am curious, what type of junk are you digging. Is it old junk?
I know places where guys hit, in late 50's ealy 60's with machines
they put together from kits. They got a lot of silver.
Pop top cans didn't come out until 1963 (if I remember right)
Depending on the traffic, people could still be throwing junk away.
If your digging pull tabs, tabs, bottle caps and foil that all could have been
tossed there after someone hit it hard.

But I do agree .. there should be at least a couple silver coins there.

Another thought, I have been back to places I played as a kid in the 60's
knowing that there would be lots of coins. Only to find out that grounds keepers
have had the area landscaped, actualy taken topsoil/dirt away and re-seeded or brought
in sod. I am sure taking a lot of the coins with the dirt.

Also I have seen buildings like that moved from their original locations.

Just my thoughts ..

Tom
