I am aware its not worth a whole lot but I'm still interested in knowing more about it. I can also read cursive but this stuff is just crazy. Any help? Thanks!

Although I'd like to see a macro close-up of the check, from what I see it appears to be the real deal with the brown ink and canceled stamp. The stamp is a George Washington Revenue Propriety Stamp. The Federal Government was faced with the financial burden of the Civil War so the Congress Act of 1862 was passed stating most documents had to have a Revenue Stamp. It was the responsibility of the proprietor to hand cancel the stamp.

Interesting item, but probably not worth a whole lot from what I'm seeing on eBay.

Could the payee say "Charles P. Kellogg & Co" - that was a big clothing store in Chicago:
Kellogg (Charles P.) & Co.
I think the account holder's name is Newton Eastman. He is listed as a "boatman" in the 1873 Chicago directory. I found listings that he owned a number of boats in Chicago circa that time period.

Sure I can make one up.. Mr Newton Eastman owned several boats and hired the Charles P. Kellogg & Co to make uniforms for all his workers from cabin boys to captains all with a similar theme but distinctive rankings and markings ....
Ohhhh new thought.. he hired them to make sails for his boats
Always a possibility, nice one.
