While we were waiting for the trap to spring, I was re-reading my manual from randy again and I decided if I get home in time, I would give the below set up a go.
Went to trap a black carnivore this morning and returned with no luck, so I switched coils on jr and headed to the field of rings for a short test spin today. Below is what I tried today – did it work or was it shear blind luck today…?? – whatever it was, I liked it.

UNDERSTANDINGTHE XTERRA – RANDY – AKA “DIGGER”
Whenpeople ask what settings I use, I generally tell them that
theyshould adjust their detector for their site, using the procedure
I’veoutlined in this book. Then I tell them I hunt in All Metal, (zero
discrimination),with Multiple Tones. All Metal allows you to hear every
metallictarget the coil passes over. But if I had to pick one specific
setting,I would chose to hunt in a Discrimination Pattern with all the
notchesset to accept. I refer to this as zero discrimination because it is a
DiscriminationPattern that is not rejecting any notch segments
