Last eveing after work, I hit an old school site. Research had told me that there had been several different schools on that site over the years, starting in 1872 or so. By the time I got to the site, I only had about an hour befor dark, but got started.

I dug about 6 memorials, a clad dime, and a 1965 clad quarter. But then...near a large tree, I hit a good signal. It was showing between 12-39 and 12-44 on the E-trac, at 10 to 11 inches.

At the bottom of the hole, I found a first! After cleaning it up and finely figuring out what it was, I discovered an 1865 2 cent piece under all that crud.

Thanks for looking,
Tim

Great find!

Did you know the 2 cent coin was among the first US money to say "In God We Trust"?

Rev. M. R. Watkinson, Minister of the Gospel from Ridleyville, Pennsylvania, in an 1861 letter to the Treasury Secretary Chase suggested "GOD, LIBERTY, LAW" be inscribed on a US coin in "recognition of the Almighty God in some form on our coins."

This suggested motto ultimately was changed by Chase to "In God We Trust" which first appeared on the 2 cent coin in 1864.

It's an interesting bit of histroy.

DCMatt,
It not only was the very first coin to have "in God we trust" inprinted on it, but it also was the only U.S. coin ever minted in Bronze.
