I've had an 1865 2 cent piece for over 30 yrs. As a kid, I brought to a local mall and the coin dealer there said it was worth $70-$80. It has a double date. The 1 and the 8 are both high and to the left. It has a Fancy Tail 5 and it is missing the upper serif on the D in United. The 5 in the date is also out of line with the curve of the other date numbers, it is higher! The 2 on the reverse shows signs of doubling under the top curve and CENTS appears to be doubled as well.

I have read that the dates were hand stamped way back when. I found this website (www.stanford.edu/~clint/q/02.htm) and it says that there were 53 of the 1865 DD minted and 21 of the triple date. It states that the 18 is high (just like mine) on the triple date. I have a 16X glass and cannot see any indications of a third strike. Am very nervous about mailing it anywhere for further investigation. Even if insured, it would take months to resolve if lost!! Any suggestions or guesses?

Thanks,

Wallycoz

Hi,
Dates were handstamped into the dies, not onto the coins as some think. This could be an example of a repunched date variety, It can also exhibit some die doubling as well. It would need to be looked at by an expert on particular varieties of Two cent pieces. I have a book around here on two-cent piece varieties. I'll try to locate something based upon your description
Have Fun,

Hi,
It is tough to say without seeing the coin. A book I have here written by Kevin Flynn (Getting Your Two Cents Worth) lists 18 different varieties for the 1865 Fancy Five pieces.
Try to get a copy of the book and see if anything matches up to your description.
Have Fun,
Bill

PS: The doubling or tripling is not the result of multiple strikes. It is a result of having multiple images on the dies that struck the coins.
