Got back out to the field again today, trying to get as much hunting in before Wednesday when they plant. Dug this 1864 IH penny right from the start. Not 5 minutes later out came the double gilt flat button. Next was this "what is it". I have it soaking on some olive oil as I'm writing. Curious to see what it is. It's the same size as a modern dime but I've never seen a dime come out of the ground like that before. Any ideas? Then I hit a dull sounding 15 on the Safari and out popped this really nice looking brooch. At least that's what I think it is. And to top it all off I ended the day digging 2 zincolns and 2 wheaties. HH.

man i love them fields!, i hit a honeyhole of a field this year and will be doing a ton of research and permission seeking in the offseason Nice finds!!

Dang..now I know im getting up early tomorrow and getting out there before work!!

Hi - I don't think that's a brooch. Is it very light? I dug something somewhat similar but not colorful, I have yet to post it, but my gut tells me it was used as some sort of decoration for a horse. Let me know what you find out!

I'm not really sure if its a brooch either but compared to ones I've seen that's what it looks like. I wouldn't say it's very light but not very heavy either. I think the metal is too light weight to be any kind of horse decoration. I'll put it on the what's it forum and see if anyone can give me some answers.

Sweet 1864 and wonderful broach!

Your "what's it" could be a nickel three-cent piece. . . it would fit the time-period for your recoveries.
They're the same exact size as a modern dime.

That would be nice but I doubt it. Thanks

Congrats! Interested to see if you get an ID on the "brooch."
