The Frog bank is as close as you can get but not a match. The frog lid is white metal and the bank is cast iron. also the eye on the lid is bigger and the skin texture is quite different. Wish I had found a bank like that tho, big big bucks.

I figured being weathered and not having a coat of paint on it, that it just might be the same. If we could have a photo of the find at a similar angle it just might help a bit.
I was thinking that the wired end of the find may have been attached to the bank itself and was the hinge.

Still an awesome find.

There are no Civil War store cards or patriotic tokens of half dime or smaller size. This is easily confirmed by consulting the two definitive references, U.S. Civil War Store Cards and Patriotic Civil War Store Cards, both by George & Melvin Fuld.

For an informed second opinion, you might try getting in touch with one of the nation's leading tokens specialists, Rich Hartzog of World Exonumia at www.exonumia.com His e-mail address is [email protected] and I feel certain that he will give you a quick and reliable reply.

Another option would be to contact the Civil War Token Society: http://www.cwtsociety.com/

This coin or token is a gilt brass imitation of a California round gold dollar. If genuine, in addition to being gold, it would have either the word DOLLAR or some abbreviation thereof, and not simply the numeral 1. A genuine coin of this type is shown below. As you can see, the design is quite similar, except for the lettering on the reverse, which is replaced by stars on the imitation piece found by Bookfisher. Thanks again, PBK. I will send a couple of pictures to Rich later today.

Re: 1864 Civil War Token:

Sorry, this is NOT a CW Storecard/patriotic token.

This is one of the One Dollar Gold spiel markes (game counter) (and is NOT gold, but in imitation thereof), listed as either #800 or 805 in the Fauver book titled American Counters Part 4: One Dollar Gold. Spiel markes or gaming counters were often made in the form of coinage, closely imitating them, and were basically early gaming checks, used in home games and casinos. A HUGE number of varieties exist, and are cataloged in excessive detail in the Fauver books.

They catalog for $2-$8, depending on variety. In the low grade of yours, basically to a counter collector, it has only slight value. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!
