Bought this photo along with 20 other era photos, I opened up the photo on all of them because from my past experienced I have found things hidden in them.... I found this of a photo of a woman on the back side of the photo of the child... It is thin tin on the back just like the photo of the kid but this photo of woman is slightly thicker tin on the back.... Looks early like 1850s.. What kind of photo is it? The 2 nd photo is the back of the woman picture it was serving as a backside cover for the kids photo...

When I mean open I mean popping out the frame...

Nice buy! You never know what's been hidden in a photo frame. Good luck with the ID.

It looks like it could be a Daguerreotype. They were on a silver washed copper plate and were the earliest commercial form of photography. Great find. BTW - the best find that I ever found behind an image in a case was a great tintype of a very young Union soldier fully armed, hand tinted and in full uniform. The lady was identified and researching, I found that she lost her 18 year old son in battle.

Thanks Doug - I have about 100 or so photos from the 1860s-1880s era and the one of the woman just looks different from the rest of them on the way it was made. Could be a picture of the kids mom or perhaps the maker used this photo to make a backside since it may have been defective or something .... And yep I wouldn't advise risking ruining a good photo to see what's under the frame but- on some photos like the one with the kid you can easily pop out the frame and take a look and perhaps find a few gold coins ; )

Oh and the frame goes back in ... If anyone is familiar with these sort of photos you know it goes right back in when u take it out... So u r not ruining the photo but it takes take Alittle force to pop it out..
