Went out today to do a little detecting with my mom. The ground is frozen pretty good here in Illinois. So after a bit we decided to go back to a spot where i found a sterling thimble earlier this year. I started swinging when i got a pretty solid 77 on the at pro. I figured one last penny for the year! Well i dug down about 4 inches and when i popped out the plug i saw this little beauty! I was so excited i ran in the house to clean her up. Its my first coin from the 1800's! I'm super excited and can't wait for spring! 030.JPG031.JPG

Thanks everyone. I'm going to put up some picks of my good finds for the year later this month. This is a great site and I've found everyone to be pretty awesome on here. Happy hunting everyone.

Hey that's great!!! I just found my first 1800's about a month ago, 1891 Liberty V-nickel....It took awhile to break the century mark, so I know the feeling you have. Your's is an Excellent find....now on to older finds for both of us! :-)

sweet find!

That is in GREAT shape! Congrats! Sure makes you all warm inside even though it can be freezing outside doesn't it? I detect in the winter too and just one find like that makes me forget the cold and keep on swinging hoping for more! Forget Winter...Keep your coil to the ground and ears keen and sharp and this won't be your last ;) The nice thing about frozen ground although it sucks to dig, is the plugs come out clean and take very little effort to return and show no trace of digging. Thumbs up buddy!

Yeah I plan on detecting for as long as possible. The oldest coin we found up til now was a 1901 V nickel. The crazy part is the town i live in is a very historic town. I've been all over it detecting and the only good stuff i've found are a few rings and a 1919 Merc. My yard is a whole different story! I've got more silver and even gold out of it! Once you find something neat it's really hard to stop looking. Thanks for looking guys and Happy Hunting!

What part of IL you from...I'm down south west frankfort always looking for ppl to go hunt with

I'm up north by the Wisconsin border. If you ever get up this way send me a message and we can go to an old school i got permission to hunt. Happy Hunting.

Awesome find!
I've been to Galena before ,I did some tree work at Grants old house some years back. It's a beautiful town with LOTS of history for northern Illinois. You should be able to do some great detecting in that area.
I'm straight across from you on the other side of the state in Lake county.

LOVELY HALF-DIME!

My son & I are also a detecting team, with many happy hunts behind us. Been detecting 3 years, with his oldest coin an 1848 dime without a bit of damage, and my oldest a 1923 Peace silver dollar surface find! Even if your ground is frozen, there are amazing surface finds lurking about. Another cold weather tip I've seen on t-net is to detect in woods because woodsy ground freezes later -- I guess due to the heavy natural leaf-mulch cover in woods. HAVE FUN! Andi

Congrats on your first seated and silver!
