Great day today, i got out for a few hours today with a buddy of mine, hunted a couple schools mostly from the 30's-50's, ended up finding an 1858 Flying Eagle Cent!!, my first one!. I definately did not expect a flying eagle cent to come out of the grounds that we were hunting. We have hunted this site before and both of us ended up with a silver quarter ( 1945 and 1946 ). I also found a sterling silver ring at the same school today.

That button is quite awesome! Quite a collection of oldies for sure.
I wish we could see the details a little more clearer on the Eagle!
Are you planning on trying to clean it?

Congrats!

The eagle is badly corroded, and i don't think there are hardly any details left, i tried a little peroxide and a q-tip to get some of the green corrosion off, as you can see it didn't really help, any copper cleaning advice out there?????? Not really sure what the button is either, it is 2 piece, still has the clasp in the back, and it says "Cheney _ _ EUHAM"??? on the back.

Great find! Found an 1857 flying eagle last yr. Seeing as how they only minted them for 3 yrs. and there were only 2000 or so in 1856, they are tough to find. CONGRATS Hogge

Button is a British general service button...probably Victorian.

Thanks Romeo-1, any idea of the time period or date they made them?

Dan heat the peroxide in the microwave for a 1 1/2 minutes, then drop the eagle in the hot peroxide for 10 minutes! keep that up til the penny is clean!!! Hot peroxide works wonders over cold peroxide, remember cold peroxide for your skin, hot peroxide for coins and relics
