Just want to show everyone my most recent coin purchase.
I must say that I bought the coin for several reasons. #1 To swing my MD over it to see what I get for a signal. #2 Cant find one.... may as well buy one. #3 $118.00 seems pretty reasonable to me for an MS 63 RED BROWN Large Cent.

Thanx for looking, VPR

$118.00 for an MS63 RB Large cent seems like a good buy. And I'm really not one to take away from someones good fortune. But I'll give you over 45 years of experience in buying coins in a short time I hope. At first it looks like a good buy....I do notice some enviromental damage on the coin (corroded). Which on a MS coin should not be there unless it has been impoperly stored over the years, which happens. Therefore if coin is really uncirculated, the best it could be is MS60 (enviromental damage). Remember mint state is exactly as from the mint, and the coin is not that. The other fact is the coin grade is one opinion (as mine is), Perhaps could be stated as MS63 details with corrosion. You always have to careful on old coppers. Many years ago ( back in the 20's) it was common practice to clean coins and not many really exist that haven't been. Using it as a practice coin for your MD is a good idea. Then again a $2.00 cull could do the same thing. Unless the coin is certified, don't really take someone else's grade on the coin involved. I found myself most are overgraded and overstated. If you ever get a chance, let a local coin dealer take a look at the coin, and get an opinion. I doubt if you would get back half of what you paid, mainly because of the corrosion. But regardless of what you paid, as long as your happy with it, that's all that counts. Just be careful in the future you don't get burned. If the price is too good, usually a reason for it. I've had plenty of experience over the years of getting burned.

How is it that a rainbow toned Morgan Dollar can grade MS+++++ ? Is that not environmental damage ?
This coin to the right person is worth $50.00 more than I paid. I will enjoy it myself for a while and then it will probably be listed for sale.

Thank You for the reply...... I could talk coins all day. VPR

That enviromental damage is a bummer. It is easy to see east on the obverse. A beautiful coin either way but MS63 it isn't. Toning on coins is not considered damage. The color is changed, that is all. Just like on copper coins. Red, Red-brown, brown and toned. As long as the color change is natural, the coin is still considered original. Great large cent still worth what you paid in my opinion.

Hey MTX,
You should start a new thread and put pictures of your collection in it! We would all love to see it ;D

the only way you wouldnt get back what you paid is if you try to sell it to a dealer they seem to want everything for nothing.

great coin!
are you going to send it out to PCGS to get graded?
