I can't find any info on 1885 large cent errors similar to the ones on your coin, my search wasn't extensive so it doesn't mean that the weren't any such errors for that coin during minting, but I'm guessing that the coin was damaged after it was minted.

I'll continue to search for such an error.

looks to me like someone stacked a couple or more large cents and beat them with a hammer of some sort. you can see where the back side of this one was against something hard, causing the features to flatten out. I don't believe it's an error coin at all

I think it's PMD too. Maybe some better close-up photos will help?

I agree! And also agree that better close-up photos taken in the natural light without glare and heavily shaded areas might help. On another note and thought, it is possible that it is a counterfeited (fake) Error Coin. In any case, someone spent some time to create the piece, probably in hopes of duping an unsuspecting Collector or other Buyer.

Looks like it may have been put on the tracks under a short gauge steam train engine to run over it. Even the small gauge trains used in dam building and many mines were great targets for the kids. I'll never forget that feeling when we found the penny after the small gauge train ran over it and it wasn't totally flattened like we thought it would be°°° :stop:
