possibly a small die inmperfection (more $) or mineral build up

i remember seeing that in a coin price guide.. the "black book" i think.
 

Thats a great find. I've never seen a large cent like that either. I am thinking die imperfection also because the mark looks like it blends in with the upper corner of the N in the word cent. Might want to have a coin dealer look at that. I checked my two coin books (2007 black book and 2008 red book) and found nothing about die imperfections or error coins in 1853 braided hair cents.
 

Looks like it handled the years underground really well. I would love to stumble on one of those someday!

In my current Red Book for 2007 there is a Large Cent listed with that mark on it. It is on page 105 and the date on the coin was from 1837-1839. I would take that coin to a dealer and see what you have. I would not sell it until I got several opinions. Or I would not sell it at all.
