1853 braided hair cent,found detecting

i found this 5 years ago detecting in a park at a small town here in minnesota.i was wondering what that is between the one and the cent on the back??some kind of mint mark or what??i havent seen that on other large cents. this is the first time showing it here on tnet.

Thats a great find. I've never seen a large cent like that either. I am thinking die imperfection also because the mark looks like it blends in with the upper corner of the N in the word cent. Might want to have a coin dealer look at that. I checked my two coin books (2007 black book and 2008 red book) and found nothing about die imperfections or error coins in 1853 braided hair cents.

Looks like it handled the years underground really well. I would love to stumble on one of those someday!

In my current Red Book for 2007 there is a Large Cent listed with that mark on it. It is on page 105 and the date on the coin was from 1837-1839. I would take that coin to a dealer and see what you have. I would not sell it until I got several opinions. Or I would not sell it at all.
