1851 large cent Button?

I found this today in a soccer field that was a tobacco farm many years ago. The date is 1851 I think, but it looks like it was worked into a button. The hole is clean, not like it was punched with a nail. It is also slightly domed over, and there is a slight lip or rim. I was told they sometimes used them as washer or to help hold shingles on roofs. Any thought would be great.
 

Awesome find. Personally i don't think its a button. Usually that style would have to have two holes to be held on. Id say your closer by saying it was used as a washer. Maybe the bow in it is from something having been torqued on it. My father found an 1820 large cent like this but it had 3 holes in it. We always wondered the same thing.
