1850's Militia Plate???

Hey guys,

I know my Civil War plates, but this one is earlier, *I think* 1850's??? Please help me with an ID on this one. I dug it out of a house site this afternoon. I would also like to get a rough idea of the value of the find.

Regards,

Re: 1850's Militia Plate???

I have the identical plate, found mine many years ago at a homestead, and I was told at the time, it was pre Civil War perhaps 1840-1850 time frame, the value was a nice amount but nothing to get excited about. If I find a photo of mine I will show. Nice going again Will..........

Don

ADDED: I just took a photo of mine (behind glass) and it is almost identical. Any additional information about these plates would be appreciated, I probably have forgotten most of what was said about mine, since I found it back in the 90's.

Notice that the wings on Don and my plates are drooped.

It's close I think, but not a match.

Thanks for your help, civilman!

Listed as "Waist Belt Plate, Militia Panel Plate. ca. 1850-65" — Plate 403, p. 256— in American Military Belt Plates by O'Donnell & Campbell. Attributed as possibly made by William H. Horstmann & Sons of Philadelphia, PA.

Horstmann and Sons also made the CW Eagle button I found at the site. Nice work, PBK!

;D Thanks again, buddy. Any idea about that silver piece I posted below? Now that PBK's on here tonight, you're in a race against time to figure it out. LOL.

I'm thinking it might have been a decoration from a presentation firearm or pistol case perhaps...I have never seen ornamentation in silver on such a case, but it is possible. The piece was obviously meant to be tacked onto something--or perhaps it is half of something, like an ornate pocket knife.

I'm still looking for something that looks like it online...
