Re: My gold tester would not work Saturday.

Am thinking about doing the same in my area. The Mizar M24 may be the wrong tester to use for yard sales. Dan

I have the GT3000 also. Whats the secret to testing silver with it?

What do you do with gold fill items? Lot's of people around here sell ziplock bags of jewelry for a few bucks. I only buy the ones I can tell have gold in them but still end up with a lot of costume jewelry & some gold fill. Last weekend I bought a bag for $3 that had 2 dwt of 14k & 3.5 dwt of 10k.

Here's a tip for people just starting out hunting yard sales for gold......Don't get out your gold tester or your scale unless you really need it. If you find an item marked 14k that they have in the $1 box & you pull out your scale 9 times out of 10 they will tell you it got in that box by mistake & ask for more money. I don't have a problem making a fair offer on an item if they ask but it's not my job to tell them they aren't asking for enough.

Re: My gold tester would not work Saturday.

Will look for a PM. Right now I don't have much in the way of gold filled. I'm assuming you would need a pretty good bit to get a refiner to pay top dollar due to the extra work to "extract" the gold. I see a good bit of GF I could buy for 10-20% of melt. I saw a 1/20 12kGF necklace today that weighed right at 9 dwt I could have bought for $2, unless my math is wrong I figured it at around $12-13 worth of gold. That's a good margin but I don't know how long it would take to accumulate enough to cash out.

Re: My gold tester would not work Saturday.

The most gold I have ever bought at once was 170g of karat gold.I know an owner of a pawnshop here in Ontario. After hours he buys the gold and then when he gets enough,he sells it to me .I usually see him every 2 weeks or so.
