Finding an 1844 half dime, is an old coin considering that Utah was settled in 1849 by the Pioneers. In a field finding a 1844 half dime was a thrill in addition to the barber and liberty dimes that were found. Detector used. CZ-3D. The choice for older areas!
So compared to back east where finding a 1780 coin is normal, a 1844 in Utah is a good find.

Awesome finds!!!

Spanishgold, If I could find a 1844 half dime here it would be a good find Silver is good where ever ya find it HH

Nice finds! Was this a new spot, or are you hitting old haunts with a new machine/settings?

KYbourbon,,, it was a combination of both.. I had always run my sensitivity at 10 if my baby could handle it but after reading many posts by good professionals, I set it to 4.8 as recommended and slowed down. Im still debating if running my CZ-3D at 4.8 as recommended or running it at 10 if there is a difference. I do know that at 10 it does give the wrong signal when iron is present.
This place that I found was a field where there were taking off top soil to use somewhere else. I just asked if I could hunt after hours and the guy said fine, so there was about 4 inches taken off from the soil. Whats wierd is the 1844 coin was just laying on the top of the soil slightly covered which would of been about 4inches down,, but then if you have ever held a half dime there is nothing to it. At first I thought it was trash because it was so small but I saw a star on it so I knew I had something. The dimes were down deeper between 5 and 8 inches. So with the top soil off the coins would of been down 11 or 12 inches. In the field where they have not taken off the top soil I have detected but only have found wheat pennys, and there is a lot of iron that is masking the silver. Thats the only bad thing about the CZ-3D is that Iron masks good signals. If only I could take off the first 4 inches of every place I hunt to get rid of the bits of iron and trash that mask good signals.....

great finds. congrats on that half dime!

Way good finds! I agree with the date and Utah. I posted oldest coin to date and then realized it probably sounded kinda funny being that it was 1852. Still was thrilled to find a coin from Utah that old and backed it up two days ago with a 1842 seated quarter. Good luck with the rest of the field!!

Great finds, seated half dimes are one of my all time favorite coins to find!!

Brian

spanishgold1 - 1st thing is, congrats on all the silver you dug and particularly the half dime! I have always been an advocate on the different forums in showing the finds from the oldest places in my area of the U.S. where I live. Yes, we who live in the "West" are limited to the time frame of coins, relics, and other indicators of the growth to the West Coast especially after the "Gold Rush" to California. So, having found your 1844 half dime would be quite equal in my eyes to having found anything from the 18th century on the East Coast! Utah really is rich in history and can offer up a lot more if you put in your time and do the research!!
