1830s Navy Button.......

I went back to my secret California Mission Period site today for a few hours..... pickin's are gettin' slim, but I did manage to pull out this 1830s Navy button. It still has a lot of gilt, especially on the back and the backstamp reads "J.M.L. & W.H. SCOVILL" over "EXTRA RICH". It also reads "No 7 (or 1)" near the center. Being a Navy button, it makes me wonder if it ever travelled the open seas on a frigate or tall ship.......

That back mark... "J.M.L. & W.H. SCOVILL" was used from 1827 to 1840.   Which I see you already knew... that is for the benefit or our other listeners.  And the "EXTRA RICH" makes it extra cool!

cool dig.... was this a mission site or a mission era site? big difference... I hunt an area around one of the first ca missions... but i imagine it has been hunted hundreds of time... its still a great place for clad.. but still unable to dig that great item..

This is a Mission Era site, but close to Mission San Jose in Fremont. The "EXTRA RICH" on the backstamp means the gilt was thickly applied..... as evidenced by a little further cleaning with a toothbrush and Lime-A-Way.

Notice the difference??!??
