I searched the former homesite where I previously found a Massachusetts copper. The best find was this Federal Marine Corps button, which I believe dates to the 1830s. It still has lots of gold gilt on it, though the shank is gone. It has a circle of stars on the back, but no lettering. Also found a very toasted 1863 Indian Head penny and a flat button with a crown on the back, so I am thinking it’s British. Happy hunting!

Now that’s pretty!! 😍

Great old buttons! Seldom see one with so much gilt left. The crown does look British. Maybe some of the lettering will be decipherable and aid ID.
Thanks! I believe the backmark on the button with a crown says “Double Gilt.” Probably early 1800s, but just a guess.

Nice button!

That's a great looking button Lenmac65! Way to represent all us Mass diggers!
Thanks Silvermonkey. I am running out of good spots to detect, so I was real happy to get this button. Good luck out there. Hope the snow misses your area.
