Found this at an old foundation, it is dated 1816 and I believe is British/Irish..it is about the size of a large cent and has what appears to be a two headed eagle on the obverse and has the initials H M above the date. The reverse has a crown at the top and the two words end on what looks like backwards N's, there are alos two intitials..E.M. at the bottom. It is also struck off-center..any ideas?? Thanks

Do you know any history behind the foundation. Who might have settled there around this time? What other types of finds did you make there? Did you use research to find the site? It's a great looking find but I cant help with the ID. Nice find. Looks like Mojjax got it in the post above.

Makes you wonder how it ended up here in Maine ! You sure do find some interesting stuff Mainedigger !

I guess it´s simple...

....some of the millions of immigrants coming to the USA had smal coins from their own country in the pockets !! ;)

Evolution...it was a foundation belonging to a Scottish family built in the late 1700's early 1800's...they were stone sloopers and the owner was a captain on one of these sloops which traveled up and down the east coast delivering granite. I have found U.S. LC's there as well as Canadian, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia pennies and half cents as well as Indian heads. Like most foundations I;ve hunted there seems to be alot of copper but I;ve yet to find any period silver coins... ??? As for research, I am on the historical society here and have researched all the old homesteads here on the island.
Mojjax..thanks much for the i.d....I greatly appreciate it!!! Not sure how or why a Russian coin was on this site?? ???
Here is a pic of the rest of what I found there today....this is about the 7th or 8th time I;ve covered this foundation and keep finding stuff and its not that big of an area, so once again no place is ever hunted out!!! What I found today along with the Russian penny is an 1864 New Brunswick penny, an 1861 Nova Scotia half penny, some buttons, part of an old skeleton key, an old musket ball that hit something and a couple of old rusty spikes.
