Part of a lock from a flinklock rifle or musket. Did you find anything with it, any brass items? That would help with an ID.

Very nice find. Compare what dimensions of the frizzen/ feather spring and the pan to see if you can ID the lock. The Tower lock pictured is fairly large, typical of the British Brown Bess musket. If your find is smaller it could be from a long rifle, fouler or pistol.

you got a buttstock plate too --the holed item (left) and a trigger guard` what yoi think is a hammer us actually the FRIZZEN what the flint held in the hammers "jaws" hits to make sparks to go into the powder in the flash pan

hum odd that the diagram is off ..the hammer is what strikes the frizzen to make sparks also the frizzen when down acts as the flash pan powder cover to keep it dry and protect it from the wind

Yes and no, what we now call a frizzen was called the hammer back in the day. What we call the hammer was called the cock.

using the modern day terms ...hammer (striker) has jaws that hold flint which hits the frizzen to make sparks that fall into the flash pans powder --fire goes thru touch hole --making the main charge go off
