1812 Light Artillery Button- Help With "1" With A "D"? (also posted in Today's Finds)

I know this button is War of 1812, Light Artillery, 1st Regiment; but what does the small "D" stand for after the "1"? I'm thinking Dragoons, but I cannot find the same button online for verification. Thanks in advance, and I'll keep searching.

Someone emailed me stating it may not be a "D", but a maker's mark. I'm not so sure; it may not be a "D" (although it certainly looks so under a jeweler's loupe), but I definitely don't see it as a maker's mark. Most manufacturer's markers are located on the reverse. I could be wrong...I certainly hope it's not a reproduction, although everything from that underwater point have been genuine.

Apologies for posting here just to get this thread back to the newest (I know; shameless), but this really has me stumped. I have scoured the internet and cannot find an 1812 era military button with any notation after the regiment; whether D, S, or 8. Can anyone find at least a picture out there or have any insight? I created a display of some of the finds from this area and I have notations for several pieces on what they are. I would love to include the information on this extra letter or number designation for this Light Artillery button.

Thanks, and I won't do this again!

I think you have a spot that does not mean anything. I have not, to my remembrance, ever seen one of those with a small designation like that. But I still think it is a heck of a find. I would love to have it.

Not the same button, but here is an 1812 1st Regiment button
