Did another 3 mile or so round trip walk this morning looking for a new site or two, well, did not really find one, but did not complete my mission since a stream stopped me in my tracks. There was a board going across it, but being 1.5 miles from my truck, and temps around 40*, I decided if I was going to fall in, I would rather do it on a warmer day, so I turned around and just about where I parked my truck was a known homestead and I would finish off the morning hunting there.
Good move, I found a spot of the homestead I did not hunt before, it was on the other side of the small Vernal pond next to the homestead. I was surprised to start getting iron signals and knew now I had a chance of finding a relic or two.
I got the sweet tone of a copper and knowing that last year my son got a Large Cent very close to the Vernal pond that was just about his worst conditioned Large Cent ever, thanks to the acidic, wet soil so close to the seasonal pond. So, I was prepared for it not being in too great of shape, but just hoped I could at least identify it and get a year off the coin.
Right next to where I got the copper, another signal sounded off and that was a regular flat button but upon cleaning it at home, I saw it was another one of the early 1800 buttons made in England that put a small Eagle on the backmark side to influence sales in America as the button being "partriotic" LOL.
So, after cleaning the Large Cent I was happy with the results considering it where it was found and the fact it is a ClassicHead Large Cent and they were known to be made of inferior copper. But, the surprise was, I did not have that year in my collection, so regardless of conditon, I now have my first 1810 Large Cent!
The variety is Sheldon 281, which is 1810 over 1809 (Common)
