1810 -- First Large Cent of '08!
I had an hour or so of light left tonight and decided to hit the old site in the woods that produced the 8 large cents at one time in just an hour or so (that post under Best of Tnet, a nice honor). The site has produced a total of 15 large cents over a couple of years. I headed up the hill toward where Earthworks found an 1899 Barber half along with a Barber quarter in the same hole...great leaf cover insulates the ground from freezing, but it's not so deep that it's a problem for the detector....so I get this really nice signal and coin sized,,,dig,,,dig...there it is! I see the wreath on the back. Problem is, it's in bad shape and looked like it was degraded...Earthworks told me to put peroxide on it, but I didn't have it so it's been in a bath of ammonia...this is a great discovery...the amonia is doing an amazing job...I keep rubbing it gently with a tooth brush and everthing is just "baked" on over a perfect coin, not that features are missing, they are underneath. The date just came out clearly as 1810...I wonder how many other old large cents I have that could be fixed up this way. I will post a photo when I get it fully cleaned and get it to Earthworks for proper photography.
What a thrill to get this in the cold of winter...I also found a nice flat button. Bergie out!
(By the way, warning on ammonia you can kiss any Patina goodbye, so use only for coins that require it. Coin looks more brown when done.) -- UPDATE -- I couldn't find the coin just now and looked all over the house, I finally looked in the garbage where I had toss the paper towels I was cleaning it with and it was underneath them in the garbage sitting on a piece of old chicken. Ughh..It's safe again. --Modern Miner -- it's amazing you mentioned that...Seriously, I found it with my Bounty Hunter and no kidding, they were Bounty Paper towels I had just bought at the story. Weird!
