Well, the coin expert got back to me, and here is what he said:

"Looks like one of the many "Kettle" replicas of US coinage, spiel markes (gaming counters). It is too far gone to make a good positive id as to which variety, but I'm sure it is NOT a pattern coin. Sorry."

Hi Gang,

My thinking is it may be a replica is because my Redbook doesn't list one for 1803.
It does for 1802 and 1804.

Who knows ?

Whatever it is, it's still an early and super cool find.

1803 counterfeit Half Eagle
Our family has had this coin for 70 years. My mother got it in change as a quarter (25 cent) piece. Though it wasn't, she kept it.
Mother's coin (she is still alive at 94) is a lot better quality than the earlier coin in this thread. I might guess that it was produced at the Philly mint, either as a brass "test coin" or many years later an employee or two got out these old dies and stamped this image into shiny brass blanks and passed them off as half eagles. Either way once it left the mint and was being passed off as gold it was a counterfeit.
But 1803 should have a 3 stamped over the 2 in the die of the prior year. I no longer see the background 2 on this coin. I thought I saw it 50 years-ago when I was 12.

A few green tarnish spots can be seen on the brass clearly when one enlarges this image.

Someone really pulled up an oldie with this one. That was almost 7 years ago. But glad I was able to check out that very unique and cool-looking find. Nice one!!
