I was told when I woke up that it wasn't going to rain today. So naturally, it starts to pour 30 minutes into my hunt. The area I was searching was 40 acres of cornfield, which can get pretty boring to hunt for hours on end.

I searched for a few hours in the rain and found some junk, some odds and ends, a button (Navy?) and the most beat up clad dime I've ever seen. Then while walking to a new area of the field I got a quick hit on my machine - a jumpy signal in the 70s. Decided to dig it, and 7-8 inches down I got an 1803 Draped Bust Large Cent! Made my hunt in the rain well worth it!

Oh wow id say it was worth it! She's a beauty I have no info on the button but congrats on that early LC!

A draped bust large cent would make anyone's hunt. Congrats on the old copper.

And a nice clean draped bust to boot, not much affected by fertilization of the field. It definitely makes the day special.

Congrats on a really nice find! There are 24 Varieties for the 1803 Draped Bust Large Cent and I might be prudent to attribute the coin! Even though it is considered a dug coin and quite porous, some of the Varieties are very scarce to rare and still have considerable value over a common 1803 Draped Bust Large Cent.

Thanks for the help.
It's a bit difficult to tell, but I think it's an S-247.

That large cent may have some porosity, but it's balanced and a great looking coin for a ground find, especially for a draped bust. Way to go!
