I went back to the woods today where yesterday I found the early navy button in VF condition. These are the same woods where I found a 1785 or 1787 Nova Constellatio. It wasn't until I found this coin that I remembered something else I found there. About two months ago I found a small coin with 1864 on the reverse which turned out to be a counterfeit California $1.00 gold piece. As soon as I looked at this coin I knew something was wrong. I could see it was dated 180? (it's actually 1803) and I knew that no American copper coin had a Turban bust obverse with a heraldic eagle reverse. Researching the net, it appears I found a counterfeit 2 1/2 gold quarter eagle. Two counterfeit coins in one woods. I wonder if a counterfeiter once lived on the site?

Geez, bookfisher, You need to camp out in those woods. There's lots of interesting finds there. :o

Too bad, it's not real...but a very nice find anyway. :)

Check out eBay...
some of these genuine counterfits are actually
worth a lot of money, or at least people will pay
good money for them on eBay...which is really, what they worth.

Nice find, great to see it here, thanks!
Congrats on a great find!

Smiles!

I would have been elated to find that!!!! :o Congrats!

weren't those 2 1/2 counterfeits usually plated or painted gold?? Course paint would be gone by now. Very interesting find and good location.

...that's awesome, what a cool conversation you can have ........ reverse looks legit, obverse is a little odd (bust too high upper left).......I am heavily leaning towards your old counterfeiter homestead theory, I beleive you found a couple "practice pieces"......

very nice!

HH all!

Hi Greg,

Actually if you go to www.coinfacts.com and click into Turban Bust Quarter Eagles and then click into the 1804, the bust doesn't seem to high.
