This is the clamp to what they called a sewing bird. Go to your search, look up sewing bird. I believe you will find them. I found one like yours a couple of months ago, and a couple of weeks later I found the bird that attaches to it. Very nice find.

Item Description

This auction is for an Authentic 19th Century Antique Sewing Clamp with Pin Cusion ~ My research revealed, that these are commonly referred to as a Sewing Bird ~ even when they do not have a "bird" as part of the design. This particular clamp likely dates to the 1880s or 1890s according to my research of comparables.

Before the advent of sewing machines, these came in very handy since the clamp would hold the material in place while the pin cushion assured that all of your pins and needles were readily accessible.
